So here is where I am at right now and honestly I am a bit stressed about the whole situation. I have a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro SS and last week the air conditioning just stopped working completely. I took it to a garage that was nearby because I was desperate and they told me the compressor has failed and needs to be replaced. They gave me a quote for almost 4000 dirhams which includes the compressor, drier, expansion valve, and labor. But here is the thing, I dont fully trust this place because when I asked them what brand compressor they are using, they got a bit defensive and said it doesnt matter. That made me uncomfortable. I know that Camaro AC systems can be picky and if you put a cheap or incorrect compressor, it might fail again within a year. Also I read online that when a compressor fails, it can send metal debris throughout the whole system. So just swapping the compressor without flushing the lines and replacing the condenser might lead to another failure soon after. I called two other garages and got completely different answers. One said I only need a compressor and nothing else. Another said I need to replace the whole AC system which sounds crazy expensive. I am not a mechanic but I try to learn as much as I can to avoid getting ripped off. I started searching online for a place that actually specializes in American muscle cars and came across a Certified Camaro AC Repair Workshop Sharjah that seems to have detailed knowledge about the common issues on these models. Before I commit to anyone, I really want to hear from other Camaro owners in the UAE. Have any of you replaced your AC compressor on a 6th gen Camaro? What was the final cost and did the repair last? Also, is it true that the original GM compressors are the only reliable option or are there good aftermarket brands that work fine? I dont mind spending money on a proper fix but I also dont want to pay for unnecessary parts. Another thing worrying me is that some shops might not have the right machine to properly recover and recharge the refrigerant with the exact oil amount. These cars use a specific type of PAG oil and if the amount is wrong, the new compressor will fail quickly. If you know a trustworthy place that has experience with Camaro AC repairs, please share their name. I am located in Sharjah but I can drive anywhere within reason. I just want my car to blow cold air again without worrying about the same problem coming back after a few months. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
