Is it ever okay to try and pick a lock yourself in an emergency?

I'm always fascinated by lock-picking, but I'm also aware it's a tricky area. In a genuine emergency – say, you're locked out and a child is trapped inside – is it ever ethically permissible (or even practically possible) to attempt picking the lock yourself? Or is it always best to call a professional, even if it takes longer? Is it even legal? Just curious what others think.
