How do you deal with getting stuck in word or crossword games?

I enjoy playing word games and crosswords, but sometimes I completely hit a wall on certain clues or letter combinations.
Usually I skip and come back later, but recently I started trying small helper tools just to explore possible word patterns from the letters I already have not for direct answers, just to spark ideas and learn new words. It actually helps me improve over time.
Do you prefer solving purely on your own, or do you sometimes use dictionaries, thesaurus lists, or word-finder style tools when you're stuck? Curious what works best for everyone here.

Pretty similar here I always try to solve it myself first and skip anything that slows me down. Most of the time, filling other clues gives enough crossing letters to figure it out later.
If I’m still stuck after that, I sometimes use a pattern tool like WordFinderTips to explore possible words from the letters I already have. I don’t use it to grab the answer directly just to spark ideas or learn new words I didn’t think of. Feels more like improving vocabulary than cheating.
For me it’s: think → skip → return → small helper if needed. Keeps it fun and still challenging.
