A Delicious 40mm Watch Bursts into a Ceramic Case
These days, we're used to Panerai releasing new products year-round. But this watch takes us by surprise: it boasts excellent water resistance and a brand-new ceramic case. Oh, and have we mentioned that the new Luminor GMT Ceramica PAM01460 is 40mm? Let's take a closer look.
Just a month ago, Panerai caused a sensation with the launch of the new Luminor Marina Militare PAM05218. This watch, with its black-coated case and aged luminous dial, is a tribute to earlier models. However, for some of us, the problem is, and has always been, that these watches are too big. The 40mm Luminor GMT Ceramica offers a solution for those with smaller wrists. It's not a complete replica of the PAM05218, but it inherits some of the latter's stylistic features. Furthermore, it is currently the only GMT watch with a smaller size but greater water resistance.
Panerai Luminor GMT Ceramic PAM01460
The PAM01460 is a 40mm black ceramic watch with a sandblasted finish. Notably, its signature crown lever and case are also made of the same material. Unfortunately, Panerai has not released the watch's thickness or lug spacing, but other existing models are approximately 15mm thick. However, the unique feature of this new Luminor GMT Ceramica is that it is the first model in the series to be water-resistant to 300 meters. In comparison, existing models are only water-resistant to 100 meters, a figure that has caused dissatisfaction among some Panerai enthusiasts. To better utilize its increased water resistance, Panerai has equipped this watch with a 22mm black rubber strap and a black calfskin strap with white stitching. Each strap utilizes the brand's exclusive tool-free PAM Click Release System, allowing users to easily change straps and buckles. The sandwich-style dial has been unveiled.
The new Luminor GMT Ceramica watch features a black sunburst sandwich-style dial. For those unfamiliar with Panerai terminology, this means the hour markers and indices are skeletonized, revealing white Super-LumiNova X2 luminescent coating through the cutouts. Panerai enthusiasts often prefer this detail to printed luminescence. Additionally, the watch features a black-on-white date display at 3 o'clock and a small seconds hand at 9 o'clock. The black-bordered hour and minute hands complement the luminescent arrow-shaped 12-hour GMT hand. Finally, the words "BiTempo" (dual time zone) are printed in white. Notably, this is the first BiTempo watch to eliminate the minute markers on the dial edge. This significant change aligns the watch's style more closely with the larger, simpler Luminor collection.
